Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
