The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
